The first meeting of the year was opened by President, Tim McCall.  Bobbie Swanson was today’s Greeter, Chuck Elizondo led in the pledge and announced our visiting Rotarian, Dave Walker from the Penn Valley Club.  Thought for the Day was done by Jan Friend who quoted two former Presidents and their ideas of government.  Guests today were Maryanne Cartan, Superintendent of the Nevada Union Joint High School District, and Janet who is the host mother for our exchange student, Belle.

It was Student of the Month, and the club was joined by students from the 5th, 7th, and 8th grades.  The 6th grade representative was too intimidated to come (are we that mean?).

Announcements:

  • Steve Rosenthal was fined $10 for a picture of him ice skating at the Holiday Inn.
  • Bob and Carol Lenhard were each fined $25 for their recent trip to Disney Land.
  • Mike Fronk announced that this week is the beginning of his radio show, America’s Wealth Management.  He was fined $25 for self – promotion which was passed on to Judy Bagley.  However, the fine may be waived if he announces he’s a Rotarian and does a promo for Casino Night.

Casino Night:

  • Steve Spiller has small posters for the merchants, and should have the larger ones in a few days.  He also has tickets for the merchants who donate or sponsor.  Steve also has the master sheet to sign up teams to canvas each area (please sign up if you haven’t done so already).
  • Judy Bagley reminded everyone to get your Casino Night items into Anita at Tri Counties Bank; the sooner the better!
  • Dick Panzica will be the BBQ master at the event, serving Tri Tip and Caesar salad among other food items.

President Tim talked about Rotary spare change boxes that you can put on your dresser and add your change to.  When the proceeds are turned into the club, they will go to Polio Plus.  If you need a box, see Dick Panzica.

Bobbie Swanson introduced Belle, our exchange student from Brazil.  She was one of 6 inbound students from Brazil this year.   Belle gave us a tour of her home state that is known for waterfalls and has a history of gold.  Her home city has a population of 400,000 where her father is an engineer for Fiat and her mother is a psychologist.  She misses playing hand ball which is a field sport that is part soccer, with the ability to use your hands.  She will be entering law school when she returns home to become an internal affairs cop.

George Grayeb’s ticket was drawn, but alas, he pulled a white marble.
